Registan in Samarkand is a forum and means " sandy place ". In the XV century, it had another name. The new name came because of a broad ditch , which left the alluvial sand.
During the Timur’s reign a modern Registan was the central bazaar . There was built a big shopping area for hat sellers.
Registan in the XVI century , as in the past , has been the main bazaar of Samarkand. In the XVII century this ensemble had some changes . There were built several amazingbiulding , as Sher-Dor madrassa and Tilla-Kori mosque.
There are numerous of small shops and buildings. There are also narrators who tell about the exploits of the saints and the heroism of famous warriors of the past .
In 1875, following the accession of Samarkand to the Russian Empire , the area was tidied , leveled and paved with . Registan again become the center of the city.
Registan Square and the surrounding streets have been the center of craft and trade activities until the XX century. You can see Registan Square in the pictures of Vereshchagin in the Tretyakov Gallery, Bure and Kazakov in Samarkand Museum .
Registan previously represented the whole ensemble of buildings - the madrassas khanakas, caravanserais and mosques . Today the area is decorated with magnificent buildings - Ulugbek , Sher Dor and Tilla -Kari . Registan is one of the most outstanding examples of city planning in the East.
