In 1646 – 1647, the governor of Samarkand -Yalangtush -biy years began a construction of the building, which , according to his idea was to close the Registan from the north side . In the new building , was decided to place madrassa and a mosque. By Yalangtush death in 1655 the construction of a "small madrassas " Tilla -Kari , which means " decorated with gold " was not completed . The building has wonderful wall paintings and rich gilt interior walls. A strong earthquake destroyed the main portal in the beginning of the XIX century . Later,its upper part was rebuilt , but without facing tiles.
Repair and restoration work began here in 1920 . This work involved experienced Uzbek masters - potters .
In the early 1930's the lateral parts of the front façade were reconstructed by locally produced tiles lining . In the 1950-1958 years tiled courtyard facades were restored; metallic bonds south- west corner of the madrasa and the south gallery of the mosque were strengthened ,portal with external facing to the east wall was restored .
Tilla -Kari is the last great architectural monuments of Samarkand , which has a rich colorful trim .
